If you’re a huge fan of Friends like I am, you’ll remember the episode "The One With The Secret Closet" where Chandler finds Monica’s junk closet. Monica is super OCD so everyone is shocked to find a disorganized closet overflowing with random things. That’s how I feel about sharing the ‘Before’ pictures of some of our closets. Similar to Monica, you won’t find much of anything out of place in our home. At least that you can see. Our closets are where things really fall apart. Living in the city, we are not privy to a ton of storage space. That combined with a new baby, someone who has way too many clothes, and a husband who’s always on the go, our closets are always the last place we spend time keeping organized.
As much as I thought I was organized before Callahan arrived, I was not prepared for how quickly we would run out of space. I started to look into closet systems and other options for creating more space but decided I needed an outsider’s perspective. That’s where Heart & Co came in. I met with Molly, founder of Heart & Co, a Professional Organizing company located in Boston and knew should we be the perfect person to help us achieve our goals of getting more efficiency out of the space we have, having things easier to find, and creating a way to keep Cal’s growing toy collection organized. She did an initial assessment of our master bed and the nursery, and then her team got to work.
Molly’s defined process definitely helped with expectations and understanding where she would need our input. The 5 steps of her process are:
Clear the space
Group all like-items together
Donate, Trash, Sell
Implement Organizing Systems
Style & Design
I have to say, step #1 was the hardest and most overwhelming. To see everything in our closets out in the open, was definitely well, eye-opening. However, it makes steps #2 and #3 so much easier. I ended up purging a ton of clothes and items that were unnecessarily taking up space.
Once everything was sorted, donated, and sent to storage, and my closet was put back together, it was amazing how much more space I had. Not only had I gained a ton of space but I could actually SEE what’s in my closet. I especially love the clear shoe boxes that now line the floor and the top shelf. Instead of digging through my clothes to get to shoe racks, I can see every pair and can swap out the ones I need by season. This has made getting ready easier and packing and putting things away easier too. I also appreciated Molly’s eye for style and design. As a final step in her process, she will find creative ways to display odds and ends like the hats on the wall in our bedroom. Something I now love as decor that’s also functional.
While having my closet organized was definitely a highlight, the real help came with the nursery. We had high hopes that we could get Cal’s clothes and toys under control while also making some room in Greg’s closet for some of his things. Molly and Charlotte, a member of Molly’s team, did a great job making better use of the dresser drawers by adding dividers and labels so I can quickly see what I have in each drawer and also what he is growing out of. They also brought in some new storage options for his blankets and toys so that they can be put away at night without taking up floor space.
One other major improvement was Greg’s closet. We were able to gain so much more space by leveraging space saving hangers and additional shelving. This allowed for us to store some of Cal’s bulkier Winter clothing instead of taking up space in his dresser.
I couldn’t recommend working with Heart & Co more. Molly, Charlotte, and I spent a few days together among a mess of clothes, toys, and luggage and you couldn’t find better people to work with. Check out Molly's website for a full list of services and her contact info!
